Apple has been gradually expanding its manufacturing operations and moving away from theChina-centric model.Starting from the beginning of 2025, the proportion of Apple products produced in India will increase significantly.iPhone17% of production will come from India, fromThe latest data from Canalys shows that iPhone production in India increased by 53% year-on-year to 23.9 million units.
This production boom is expected to continue. Currently, China supplies about 16% to 17% of the world's iPhones, a proportion that has grown in just a few years and is expected to reach 25% by 2027. This accelerated growth may be driven by initiatives such as Foxconn's $1.5 billion investment in India.
Apple has also been working on producing newer models in India, including high-end models such as the iPhone 16 Pro. It is almost certain that the iPhone 17 will also be produced at some capacity in India, where the phone has reportedly entered the trial production stage.
The shift is driven in part by the ongoing U.S. tariff war, with China becoming a major target of U.S. President Donald Trump.
In the context of tariff escalation, Apple's import model has changed. In May, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that half of the iPhones sold in the United States in the second quarter were made in India.
The Indian government has also seen this change. A report in May showed that apple exports increased by 116% year-on-year in April.
India's transformation is not just about making iPhones, it's also about buying them. The report added that Apple is currently one of the top five smartphone brands in the country in terms of market demand in India. In the first quarter of 2025, iPhone sales revenue in India increased by 28% year-on-year. The reasons for this are said to be increased adoption of high-end devices, as well as attractive financing options.
Apple has clearly noticed this need. The company is currently building a new Apple store at Sky City Mall, Mumbai's newest mall, while reports suggest that one is also being built at Bengaluru's Phoenix Mall of Asia.
