The Nintendo Switch 2 is now the fastest-selling video game hardware in the history of the U.S. gaming industry. It sold 1.6 million units in the U.S., blowing away the previous record holder, the PlayStation 4, which launched with 1.1 million units, according to Circana executive director and analyst Mat Piscatella.

Since the Nintendo Switch 2 launched last month, we've seen multiple reports of it selling like hotcakes around the world, including the United States. In just four days on the market, Switch 2 has sold 3.5 million units worldwide. It's selling twice as fast as the original Nintendo Switch when it launched in 2017, and broke sales records in the U.S. in its first week.
Piscatella's June 2025 report confirms the Switch 2's hold on the top spot and demonstrates the impact the console's launch had on the video game industry that month: hardware spending increased 249% compared to June 2024. It's no surprise that the Nintendo Switch 2 became the best-selling video game hardware in the U.S. that month (by sales and sales), beating out the PlayStation 5 that month. That being said, the PS5 will still be the best-selling hardware in both categories in 2025, though it will be interesting to see if that changes before the end of the year.
Another big reason why the Switch 2 is such a hit is that 82% of players who bought a Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. in June also bought Mario Kart World, either through a Switch 2 bundle or as a physical game separate from the console. The second best-selling game on Nintendo platforms last month was "Cyberpunk 2077", followed by "Rune Factory: Guardians of the East", "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" and "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" ranked fourth and fifth respectively.

Switch 2 territory aside for a moment, other noteworthy aspects of the US video game industry's June 2025 sales charts are that Elden Ring: Nightreign continues to see strong sales, entering the top 10 best-selling games in the US so far in 2025 at number eight, and becoming the best-selling premium game in the US in June 2025.
"Death Stranding 2: The Beach" is second only to "Reign of the Night" on the sales list in June 2025(Nightreign), ranked second, has not yet entered the top 20 best-selling games of the year in the United States. However, zooming into the sales list of specific platforms, "Death Stranding 2" ranks at the top of the US PlayStation 5 game sales list.
Finally, Stellar Blade is another noteworthy title on the sales list, having jumped to second place on the PC sales list due to its release on the PC platform, and moving from 185th to fifth place on the overall sales list in June 2025. Still, like every other game, it's still way ahead of Dominion of the Night on the charts.
The Nintendo Switch 2 dominating the charts is perhaps the most expected thing about 2025. The most exciting thing about this console right now is how far it can go. We don't yet know the exact figures for global sales in June, but reports earlier this month suggested sales exceeded 5 million units. Market analysis company DFC Intelligence predicts that Switch sales will reach 16 million units by the end of 2020. At this rate, the Switch 2 will almost certainly reach such heights.
