Google announced on Tuesday that it was working onAImodelAdding a new, experimental feature that allows users to ask complex questions and follow-up questions directly in search to dig deeper into a topic.
One of the new features is Canvas, which helps you create study plans and organize information across multiple sessions in the side panel. For example, if you want to create a study plan for an upcoming exam, you can click the new "Create Canvas" button to get started. Afterwards, AI mode will start integrating everything in the Canvas side panel, and you can continue to refine the output with subsequent prompts until it matches your expectations.
Soon, you'll also be able to upload files like class notes or syllabus to customize your study guide. Users enrolled in AI Mode Labs experiments in the U.S. will be able to experience Canvas in the coming weeks.

Google is also bringing Project Astra features directly into AI mode through Search Live, which integrates with Google Lens, the tech giant's visual search tool.
"When you use Live Search, it's like having an expert on speed dial who can see what you're seeing and explain tough concepts in real time, all with easy access to helpful links on the web," Robby Stein, Google's vice president of search products, wrote in a press release.
To use this feature, just open Lens in the Google app, tap the Live icon, then point your camera at an object and ask a question. This feature allows users to talk to Google Search in AI mode using visual content from their camera feed.

This week, live search with video input will be available on mobile in the U.S. for users participating in AI Patterns Lab experiments. Additionally, Google announced that users will soon be able to use Lens in AI mode to interrogate content on their desktop screen.
“Maybe you’re working on a geometry problem and want to better understand one of the graphs,” Stein said. "Click 'Ask Google about this page' in the address bar and select the appropriate chart. You'll see an AI overview with a snapshot of key information directly in the side panel. This week, you'll be able to follow up with more questions via AI Mode by selecting AI Mode at the top of the Lens search results or by clicking the 'Drill Down' button at the bottom of the AI Overview."

Additionally, while you can already use AI mode to ask questions about images in the Google app, you can now do this on desktop as well. Google has also added support for desktop PDF uploads, allowing you to ask detailed questions about documents.
For example, you can upload PDF slides of a school lecture and ask follow-up questions to deepen your understanding beyond the class material.
Google says AI mode will support other file types beyond PDFs and images later this year, including Google Drive files.
