U.S. President Trump has threatened to impose additional tariffs of 40% on products deemed to be "transshipped" through other countries. The global tariff rate announced by the White House on Thursday night from 10% to 41% also includes this punitive measure.

However, many countries are still unclear about the details regarding the "rules of origin" of which goods the United States considers to be transshipment products.

Leah Fahy, chief economist at Capital Economics, said in a note on Friday that it was unclear how this would be implemented in practice.

A senior U.S. official said in Washington on Thursday that a decision on the rules would be made in the coming weeks. The United States has previously stated that it will resolve this issue before August 1.
