Intel confirmed Thursday that three top executives from the company's manufacturing operations will retire. Intel's newly appointed CEO Chen Liwu is currently implementing comprehensive reforms to revive the troubled U.S. chip maker.

Intel told employees on Tuesday that Kaizad Mistry and Ryan Russell, corporate vice presidents of technology development, would retire, as would former IBM executive Gary Patton, corporate vice president of design technology platforms.

Intel also discussed changes to its technology development group, which creates manufacturing processes, according to two people familiar with the matter. Intel plans to shrink its capacity planning team and lay off some of its engineering team, people familiar with the matter said.

Intel's manufacturing operations are currently led by Naga Chandrasekaran, a former Micron Technology executive who was hired by then-CEO Pat Gelsinger about a year ago.

In March this year, Chandrasekaran took over the technology development and manufacturing operations, further expanding his responsibilities. He has since reorganized his subordinates, including laying off employees, as part of Intel's global layoff plan.
