Before we had relatively sensible Windows version names like H1 and H2,MicrosoftpreviousThe version control scheme is very strange and random. We have used words such as "Anniversary Update", "Fall Creators Update", "Spring Creators Update"Version names like ". Can you look at these names and find out when they were released? No one can, thank God,MicrosoftFinally released in 2018Windows 10 version 1803 (also known as April 2018 Update)abandoned them.

Now, Microsoft senior Windows expert Raymond Chen has once again shared interesting information from within the company. This time, he reveals the reason behind Windows changing its ridiculous naming scheme, and the reason isn't entirely surprising.

Basically, during an all-hands meeting, an executive asked employees if there was unconscious bias at Microsoft. In layman’s terms, this means any thoughts, associations, or biases we unintentionally hold that are beyond our control. Thankfully, a brave employee who wished to remain anonymous came forward and pointed out that he was born in the Southern Hemisphere, where the seasons are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere. Therefore, the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update means nothing to him since the season in his hometown is not fall.

This suggests there is a preference for the northern hemisphere, and the name is not inclusive. Fortunately, Microsoft management present at the meeting agreed with the employees, and the naming scheme was shifted to one related to hemisphere neutrality the next day.

In addition to not clearly stating when updates were released, the previous naming scheme also incorrectly assumed that seasons were universal. It's also important to note that we previously received feature updates twice a year, so dividing them into seasons would be even more confusing.

Eventually, Microsoft switched to the H1 and H2 naming scheme to represent the two halves of the year, getting only one feature update per year, which simplified the whole convention.

Windows 11 version 25H2 is expected to be released later this year.
