According to statistics released by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on the 6th, as of January 1, 2025, excluding foreigners living in Japan, Japan's population has decreased for 16 consecutive years, with a total of approximately 120.65 million, a decrease of approximately 908,000 from the previous year. The rate of decrease has reached a new high since statistics were collected in 1968.
Data show that between January 1, 2024 and January 1, 2025, the number of births in Japan hit a record low and the number of deaths hit a record high.
Looking at administrative divisions, only Tokyo's population increased, and the increase was only 0.13%. In terms of age groups, Japan’s population aged 65 and above accounted for 29.58%, and the population aged 15 to 64 accounted for 59.04%, both of which increased compared with the same period last year.
In this regard, Musk said: "Japan will lose nearly 1 million people this year. This population trend was foreshadowed half a century ago and has nothing to do with artificial intelligence." He believes that "artificial intelligence is the only hope to reverse this situation."
Earlier, regarding Japan's population decline, Musk commented: Unless there is a change that causes the birth rate to exceed the death rate, Japan will eventually cease to exist.
