Microsoft has released Edge version 139 to all users on the stable channel. The latest version (139.0.3405.86) brings some notable improvements to the browser, including performance improvements and bug fixes. Additionally, as Microsoft works to simplify the browser and its functionality, it has also removed some existing features.

Microsoft Edge 139 brings a redesigned Settings section that is now built on WebUI2, which significantly improves performance and responsiveness. In addition, Microsoft is also optimizing Settings by streamlining the number of pages and reorganizing various options to provide a more cohesive user experience. However, this update also disables an important graphics feature.

Wallet functionality in settings page is disabled. It will now redirect users to a new "Passwords, Payments & Personal Information" experience in Settings. Speaking of passwords, the built-in password manager now notifies you of password breaches in real time. If one of your passwords is found to be in a known data breach, Edge prompts you to take immediate action and create a new password.

Other changes in Edge 139 include:

  • Open external links in another profile when external apps are recommended. When you set Microsoft Edge as the default browser for opening external links from an application, Microsoft Edge must determine which profile to use to open the link.

  • Introducing a new policy to enable/disable the display of Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat in the toolbar in Edge for Business. Edge for Business now has a dedicated policy Microsoft365CopilotChatIconEnabled that enables and disables the display of Copilot in Edge in the Edge toolbar.

  • New autofill profile settings configuration. The web form field collection consent switch will be available in the Autofill settings (edge://settings/autofill/personalInfo). This allows users to consent to Microsoft Edge collecting web form field labels (e.g. "First Name", "Email") to improve the accuracy of autofill suggestions.

  • Web AI API for prompts and writing assistance. Microsoft Edge now implements the Writing Assistance API and Hints API for Edge extensions using Phi-4-mini, the browser's built-in local language model. These easy-to-use JavaScript APIs can be enabled via the Edge flag (set to "Enabled" and by default only available for the extension's summarizer and hint APIs) so that sites and extensions can apply AI capabilities on the web.

  • Performance and security network enhancements. Basic browser functionality is now split into two different experiences (Performance and Secure Networking) - both accessible from the Settings and More menus ("…" on the menu bar).

  • Reset Microsoft Edge Enterprise Sync. For users who are having issues syncing browsing data between other signed-in devices, you can reset sync data from Microsoft servers via the Edge setting edge://settings/profiles/sync/reset.

  • Update Microsoft AutoUpdate policy. The MAUEnabled policy allows administrators to continue using Microsoft AutoUpdate on macOS.

Finally, Edge 139 includes eight security fixes for Chromium vulnerabilities. Microsoft also released a security guide detailing a critical graphics feature that has now been disabled.
