Recently, the issue of the gradual degradation of the waterproof and dustproof performance of smartphones over time has once again attracted attention.Google made a rare public reference to the risk in a recent ad.Its promotional image clearly states that the device "complies with the IP68 rating under the IEC 60529 standard when leaving the factory", but also emphasizes that it is "not permanently waterproof and dustproof" and the accessories do not have protective properties.
Google points out that the phone’s protective properties will gradually lose its effectiveness through wear and tear from daily use, unofficial repairs, or accidental damage. In addition, the mobile phone does not have anti-fall function, and a drop and impact may directly cause the loss of its protective capabilities.
Google further stated that the warranty does not cover damage caused by falling or external force, let alone water intrusion. Once water intrusion occurs, the equipment's warranty will be immediately void.
Multiple sources of information show that as mobile phones are used longer, their sealing structures will gradually age due to daily wear and tear, resulting in a decline in protective capabilities. Especially when exposed to chlorine or salt in swimming pool water, dropped or bumped, the waterproof and dustproof performance of the phone is more likely to be significantly reduced.
It is important to note that even if a mobile phone claims to have high-level protection capabilities such as IP68, once water intrusion occurs, most manufacturers will still regard it as "man-made damage" and will not be covered by the warranty. This means that even if the device passes strict testing when it leaves the factory, users still need to be cautious during long-term use.
