According to Sina reports, the Seoul High Court in South Korea today ruled that Apple should compensate seven Korean iPhone users each with 70,000 won (approximately 380 yuan). The reason is that the device performance is deliberately degraded after a software update. It is reported that more than 62,000 Korean iPhone users have previously filed a lawsuit against Apple, accusing Apple of deliberately reducing the performance of older phones after software updates to force users to buy new phones.
This is also the "notorious" battery door incident in the world, which can be traced back to the end of 2017.
Apple used system updates to slow down and freeze older iPhone models, forcing users to replace newer models. It even claimed it was to extend battery life and allow users to use it longer, but the results were exposed by users.
Let’s review the entire “Battery Gate” incident:
Since August 2016, many Apple users have reported that their iPhones will suddenly lose power and shut down. The mobile phones experiencing this problem involve multiple models, especially the Apple 6s. For some consumers who have complained, Apple has promised to replace the batteries to ensure the normal use of consumers.
In December 2017, it was revealed that Apple secretly slowed down the processor speed of iPhones with aging batteries without the knowledge of users. On December 20, Apple admitted to slowing down older iPhones to avoid unexpected shutdowns and extend their lifespan.
On December 29, 2017, Apple officially issued an open letter apologizing for the incident. For out-of-warranty iPhone 6 and subsequent models, the price of battery replacement will be reduced from 608 yuan to 218 yuan, and the replacement cycle will be from the end of January to December 2018.
Of course, the incident did not end with Apple's apology. Many countries have filed lawsuits against "Apple Battery Gate", and the lawsuits in some countries and regions are still pending.
