During this period, the inscription function surrounding the Bitcoin blockchain has been sought after by many people in the currency circle. The main provider of related functions is ORDI, which has also caused the ORDI token to skyrocket from a few dollars to more than fifty dollars. What is the Bitcoin inscription? This is mainly due to the redundancy in the design of the Bitcoin blockchain. One Bitcoin is divided into 100 million satoshis (satoshi). The Ordinals protocol can write content into satoshis for engraving. Deletion and modification are not supported after writing.

In theory, the engraved content will exist forever as long as the Bitcoin project does not close down, because Bitcoin is distributed, and each node stores block information and also contains these engraved contents.

In response to the increasing number of inscriptions, Bitcoin Core developer Luke Dashjr recently issued an article explaining:

Inscription is spamming the blockchain by exploiting a vulnerability in BitcoinCore, which since 2013 has allowed users to place limits on the size of additional data in transactions they relay or mine, but this limit can be bypassed by obfuscating the data into program code (the Ordinals protocol was written with data obfuscation in mind).

This bug was recently fixed in BitcoinKnots v25.1 and it took longer than usual due to my workflow being severely disrupted late last year (v24 was skipped).

BitcoinCore is still vulnerable in the upcoming v26 version, and I can only hope that it is finally fixed before v27 is released next year.

There are several key points in this passage:

  • The first is that the inscription belongs to Spam, which is garbage content.

  • The second is that the Ordinals protocol bypasses the original restrictions and writes through obfuscated code.

  • The third is that this behavior is actually considered an attack.

  • The fourth is to fix this "loophole" and completely ban the inscription function.

  • In some ways, banning inscriptions makes sense because writing redundant content into the Bitcoin blockchain is probably not a good idea and will lead to more and more redundant content in the Bitcoin blockchain over time.

But the problem is that the engraving function has been used now, and the content currently written exceeds 600K. If it is suddenly banned, it will also be a problem, which will directly ban the Ordinals ecosystem.

The current ORDI token has plummeted, which is obviously related to LukeDashjr's plan. However, it is not yet certain whether BitcoreCore will completely ban this function, and the community may need to continue to discuss it.
