Nintendo managed to circumvent supply constraints, making the Switch 2 the fastest-selling console in the company's history. The latest data from the U.S. market confirms this: the Switch 2 was the only console to drive hardware spending growth in the U.S. in July.

According to data from Circana and Sensor Tower, Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 2 million units in the United States from its launch in June to the end of July, 75% higher than the early sales of the original Switch. Nintendo's new handheld gaming console has catapulted annual hardware spending and capped one of the best Julys for the video game industry in decades.

Hardware spending across the industry totaled $384 million, a 21% increase from July last year. This was the highest July for hardware spending since 2008, when more than $441 million was spent.

However, sales of all other consoles fell significantly last month year-over-year. PlayStation 5 sales are down 47%, original Nintendo Switch sales are down 52%, and Xbox Series console sales have plummeted 69%. Unsurprisingly, the Switch 2 is the best-selling console, while the PS5 is in second place in both July 2025 and year-to-date sales.

This trend is consistent with the record set by Switch 2 when it was released globally in June this year: 3.5 million units were sold within four days of release, making it the fastest-selling console in Nintendo history. As of this writing, global sales may have exceeded 6 million units. By comparison, the original Switch has sold more than 153 million units since its debut in 2017, despite being hampered by supply shortages at the time.

"Boogie: Powerful" was the highest-selling physical game on Nintendo's platform in July and the third-highest-selling game overall, behind EA Sports' "College Football 26" and "2025 EA Sports MVP Bundle." However, if you include digital editions and bundles, Mario Kart World may be near the top of the rankings, as Nintendo has confirmed that it is the most popular Switch 2 game.

Other games that performed strongly in July included Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 and Grounded 2. Meanwhile, Elden Ring: Nightreign has seen a sharp decline in rankings, falling from No. 1 in June to No. 16.

Overall spending on games and content increased slightly year over year in July, but only by single digits. Spending on accessories fell 8%, with spending in all categories except hardware still down slightly year-to-date compared with 2024. The best-selling games so far this year are Monster Hunter Wilds, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and College Football 26.
