OpenAI is preparing to mass-produce its self-developed artificial intelligence chips for the first time through cooperation with Broadcom. On September 5, according to the British Financial Times, citing people familiar with the matter, OpenAI reached a strategic cooperation with the US semiconductor giant Broadcom to jointly design independent artificial intelligence chips and plans to officially put them into mass production next year.

The latest news comes from Broadcom CEO Hock Tan. He announced during an earnings call on Thursday that the company had secured a fourth major customer for its custom AI chip business, with the customer committing orders worth $10 billion. People familiar with the matter confirmed to the media that this mysterious new customer is OpenAI.

Boosted by this news and better-than-expected results, Broadcom's stock price rose 4.5% in after-hours trading. OpenAI's strategy mirrors that of technology giants such as Google, Amazon and Meta, which have designed their own specialized chips to run AI workloads.
