Well-known industry insider Tom Henderson revealed that according to his reliable sources, Sony plans to equip the PlayStation 6 with a removable optical drive. This design was originally introduced during the mid-term PS5 refresh and was designed to reduce production and logistics costs. Multiple anonymous sources confirmed that the detachable optical drive design will continue to the next generation of consoles.

Similar to the PS5 sales strategy, PS6 will provide two purchase options: a traditional package version with a purely digital version of the console equipped with a detachable optical drive as standard, and the flexible option of purchasing the optical drive separately in the future. Sources emphasized that the solution has passed Sony's internal evaluation and the operating results of the PS5 optical drive have fully met the company's expectations. The move is mainly to control costs during "uncertain times", which may refer to tariff fluctuations.

It is reported that this uncertainty has also affected the appearance design of PS6. The new host will adopt a simpler shape than the previous generation, aiming to improve production efficiency, optimize transportation space utilization and reduce equipment weight. Sony continues to address supply chain challenges through modular design while maintaining market flexibility.
