Cai Lei was diagnosed with ALS in 2019. This is a degenerative disease of the nervous system in which patients gradually develop symptoms such as muscle atrophy, limb stiffness, and respiratory failure.

The disease progresses at a significantly different rate in different patients and ultimately leads to death from respiratory failure. Unlike Alzheimer's disease, ALS usually does not affect patients' higher-level neurological activity. Patients in the advanced stages can still think clearly and retain their pre-morbid memory, personality and intelligence.
