US President Donald Trump said the suspect in the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk was in custody and said he had just received information about it. "I think we have a high degree of certainty that we have him in custody," Trump said in an interview on Friday.

Trump said a pastor and the suspect's father were involved in assisting in the arrest.

"It was people close to him who reported it, you know, they said, wow. That's interesting, we have very good pictures, but not great, not perfect," Trump said.

Trump said he hopes the person responsible for the Kirk shooting will be convicted and sentenced to death.

Kirk was shot and killed Wednesday at a campus event in Utah, prompting authorities to launch a massive manhunt for the gunman.
