Recently, Tesla’s new car that has attracted global attention, the Cybertruck, has finally begun delivery. The first batch of 10 new cars delivered was hand-delivered to each owner by Musk. It is reported that the Tesla Cybertruck pickup truck is very popular, and the current global orders have exceeded 2 million units. The question is, if it is introduced into China later, will it be a big hit?
Although Cybertruck has advantages in terms of price, battery life and performance, and it can even be said that the overall performance of this pickup truck is better than any electric pickup truck currently on the market, in the editor's opinion, when it is introduced to the domestic market, sales will most likely be "low", and the starting price of more than 400,000 is not the main reason!
First of all, the appearance of Tesla Cybertruck is very controversial.
Purely from the perspective of styling design, Cybertruck is indeed subversive of the times. However, the Chinese people's response to this pickup truck has been polarized, either exciting or objectionable. The angular design is obviously not the preference of Chinese people.
Secondly, the body size of Tesla Cybertruck is not suitable for the domestic market. The United States is a vast country with sparsely populated areas, small cities, relatively developed road networks, and poor public transportation and infrastructure. Therefore, Americans like to buy pickup trucks, especially large-size pickup trucks, such as the Foton F150, which can bring more comfort and larger loading space.
China is very different. The length of the Cybertruck pickup truck reaches 5682.9 mm, and the width reaches 2413.3 mm when the rearview mirror is unfolded, which far exceeds the body size of domestic pickup trucks and even reaches the body size of some commercial light trucks.
Even though there is a concept of "bigness is beauty" in China, the excessive size is obviously a burden. With such a size, it is very inconvenient whether traveling through streets or parking. Driving on the complicated domestic roads, driving a full-size pickup truck on the road is "torture".
In addition to the body size, the "too advanced" screen shifting will also cause some consumers to wait and see.
Like Tesla's new Model 3 and Model Y, the Cybertruck is integrated into the screen and uses screen shifting, which is not only inconvenient but also poses huge safety risks in the event of a malfunction. In terms of "trying new things" and safety, I believe the Chinese people are quite rational about this.
In addition, in terms of power consumption, Cybertruck is actually not ideal. As a pickup truck, with a drag coefficient of more than 0.3Cd and a curb weight of more than 3 tons, referring to the previously exposed Cybertruck test, the power consumption per 100 kilometers is basically 20kWh.
The last point is more important, that is, although the ban on pickup trucks has been lifted on a large scale in China, there are still many restrictions on their use, especially the fifteen-year scrappage and highway toll policies, which have discouraged most urban consumers, and small cities lack the purchasing power of models in this price range.
In the editor’s opinion, what is the main purpose of pickup trucks in the domestic market? The main thing is to pull goods. The sci-fi design of the Cybertruck is obviously not practical, and it remains to be confirmed whether the quality is durable and easy to maintain.
One thing worth paying attention to is that the one-piece die-cast exoskeleton structure used by Cybertruck is strong, durable and even bulletproof, but have you considered the consequences of hitting people and cars? Moreover, although integrated die-casting can reduce costs, the maintainability is almost zero. Referring to previous Model 3 collision repair cases, a small impact may cause it to be scrapped.
Editorial
In the future, Cybertruck, which enters the country as an import, is destined to be a "big toy" for a few people, and will not affect the domestic mainstream pickup truck market, which is mainly priced under 200,000 yuan, for the time being. However, considering Tesla's "halo", Cybertruck may affect the domestic high-end electric vehicle market, and may also affect the domestic mid-to-high-end off-road vehicle market. The above is only my personal opinion. Make bold assumptions and verify carefully. If you don’t like it, please don’t comment or delete it!
