Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the law enforcement arm of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has signed a $3 million contract with Magnet Forensics. The company makes a mobile phone cracking and unlocking device called Graykey.

The contract, which appeared in a U.S. federal government procurement database on Tuesday (September 17), is for a software license for cell phone cracking technology for use by HSI to "obtain digital evidence, process multiple devices, and generate forensic reports critical to the core mission of protecting national security and public safety," documents show.

Although no specific product name is mentioned in the contract, it is speculated to be Graykey - a forensic system for unlocking smartphones and extracting data from them, originally developed by Grayshift. In 2023, after private equity firm Thoma Bravo acquired Grayshift, it promoted its merger with Magnit Forensics.
