Earlier this year, Dragonfly - a mission that sends rotorcraft to explore Saturn's moon Titan - passed all success criteria in its preliminary design review. The Dragonfly team has reprogrammed the mission based on anticipated available funding in fiscal year 2024 and estimates a revised launch readiness date of July 2028. The Agency will formally assess the mission's launch readiness date at the IAEA Program Management Board in mid-2024.

Dragonfly takes a novel approach to planetary exploration, using a rotary-wing lander for the first time to travel between and sample different locations on Titan. Dragonfly's goals are to determine the habitability of the lunar environment, study the development of pre-biochemistry in an environment where carbon-rich materials and liquid water may have been mixed for long periods of time, and even look for chemical signs of whether water-based or hydrocarbon life once existed on Titan.
Dragonfly was designed and built under the direction of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, which manages the mission for NASA.
