Apple continues to promote the coverage of the "Tap to Pay on iPhone" device-free card swiping function in Europe, and recently announced that the service has been officially launched in five European countries. The iPhone device-free card swiping function was first launched in the United States in May 2022. It allows merchants to collect payments using only their iPhones, without the need for external devices such as separate card readers (such as Zettle), which greatly improves the convenience of payment collection for small and medium-sized merchants.

Apple’s official website shows that the list of five new countries and cooperative financial institutions newly added in this round is as follows:

  • Estonia: SumUp, Revolut

  • Latvia: SumUp

  • Lithuania: SumUp, Revolut

  • Monaco: Adyen, BNP Paribas

  • Norway: Adyen, Nexi, PayPal, Stripe, SumUp, Surfboard Payments, Viva.com

Device-free credit card swiping on iPhone not only supports Apple Pay, but is also compatible with major bank cards such as American Express, Visa, and Mastercard. Local payment services such as Surfboard Payments are also supported in Norway.

Jennifer Bailey, vice president of Apple Pay and Wallet Business, said when it was first launched in the United States: "As more and more consumers use electronic wallets and credit card swipes to pay, iPhone device-free swiping will provide businesses with a safe, private and convenient way to collect payments, and use the powerful performance of iPhone to bring users a new checkout experience."

After expanding to eight EU countries in May this year, Apple officially announced that this feature now covers 43 markets and regions around the world.
