As of 2025, 15,274 games have been released on the Steam platform. Although the number is considerable, it has not yet broken the record of 18,604 games set in 2024. Although Steam has a large number of popular works, there are also many ingenious works from independent developers or small teams every year. Surprisingly, about 40% of games on the platform this year failed to recoup even the base $100 launch cost.

This data comes from the algorithmic estimation of the Gamalytic website (the platform uses algorithms to deduce Steam game sales and revenue). Since there are many unaccounted variables, it is recommended to treat the relevant values with caution.
Artur Smiarowski, the producer of the turn-based meat pigeon RPG "Soulash", recently shared his observations on the Steam market this year, pointing out that the profit margin of independent games may shrink compared with 2024. He said: "The peak of the independent game nugget craze may have passed."

According to the statistical chart cited by Smiarowski, the total revenue of the Steam platform in 2025 is estimated to be US$4.7 billion, of which the average revenue of the bottom 30% of games is only US$37, while the average revenue of the top 5% of games is more than US$300,000. He particularly emphasized: "Of the more than 13,000 Steam games released this year, only 8% achieved total revenue of more than US$100,000, and 40% of the works failed to recover the US$100 distribution cost."

As a mainstream game distribution platform, Steam not only hosts best-selling masterpieces, but also provides a stage for independent developers to pursue their dreams. Therefore, the existence of a large number of low-revenue works is not necessarily a negative signal. On the contrary, it confirms that Steam has become a training ground for novice developers.
