Last week, a user on Reddit posted an image showing that their "Cosmic Orange" iPhone 17 Pro appears to be turning into a pinkish, rose gold-like color.

Another case on TikTok also showed that the camera platform and frame of a "Cosmic Orange" iPhone 17 Pro turned pink. While these cases have generated some attention on social media, they are far from a "widespread phenomenon."

Here are the most likely causes of discoloration, and how to avoid it on your iPhone 17 Pro.

The discoloration appears to be related to an interaction with peroxide-based cleaning solvents, based on what is available through TikTok and Reddit posts. The body of the iPhone 17 Pro is made of anodized aluminum, and its corrosion resistance and color uniformity rely on an artificial oxide film.

Hydrogen peroxide (hydrogen peroxide) is a strong oxidant and may damage this oxide film, especially with repeated or prolonged exposure. This can cause surface etching, fading, or localized discoloration as the exposed metal begins to react. This also explains why the affected areas are mainly concentrated on the aluminum middle frame and camera platform, rather than the back cover glass.

So, if you don’t want your iPhone 17 Pro to “discolor,” it’s best to follow Apple’s recommendations and stay away from cleaners that contain bleach or hydrogen peroxide.

On its support website, Apple explicitly warns:

Do not use products containing bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Avoid letting water get in any openings, and don't immerse iPhone in any cleaning agents. After disinfection, wipe with a soft, slightly moist (water) lint-free cloth.
