OpenBSD 7.8 was officially released today, bringing many new features to this popular BSD operating system. Announced by Theo de Raadt, the most notable addition is preliminary support for the Raspberry Pi 5 (via the serial console), as well as a series of improvements to the Apple ARM architecture and Qualcomm Snapdragon X1 Elite.
Specifics include new drivers for Qualcomm Snapdragon DRM graphics and DisplayPort controllers.

OpenBSD 7.8 has significant improvements in AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization (AMD SEV). The new version supports PSP ioctl for SEV-ES (encryption and state measurement) and adds a new VMD option that can run virtual machines in SEV-ES mode. These innovations prepared the ground for subsequent SEV-SNPs. Confidential virtual machines (VMs) can now be launched using the VMM/VMD hypervisor and the OpenBSD guest of KVM/QEMU.
In addition, OpenBSD 7.8 further improves the compatibility of the FUSE file system with Linux implementations, improves system suspend/hibernation functionality and SMP (symmetric multiprocessor) performance. This update also uses the Linux 6.12.50 version of the DRM graphics driver, adds a variety of Rockchip drivers, Raspberry Pi RP1 drivers, and adds H.264 video support to the uvideo driver; the network driver has also been fully optimized.
