Earlier this year, the Dubai authorities and Elon Musk announced that the "Dubai Loop" underground road system project to be jointly constructed will be put into operation in 2026, which may become a turning point for urban transportation in the Middle East. The loop system is a high-speed all-electric underground transportation system developed by Boring, a tunnel technology company founded by Elon Musk. It is expected to be put into operation in the second quarter of 2026, reshaping Dubai's urban transportation pattern with fast and clean underground travel.

Unlike traditional subways, the loop system can be imagined as Tesla electric cars driving in dedicated tunnels without stopping at stations along the way, delivering passengers directly to their destinations.
This direct mode means that when ordinary metro trains need to stop station by station between point A and point B, the direct mode of the "Dubai Circle Line" will significantly shorten passenger travel time.
In the initial stage, the Dubai Ring Line will first launch a 17-kilometer demonstration section with 11 stations and can transport more than 20,000 passengers per hour. Vehicles can reach top speeds of 100 miles (160 kilometers) per hour and travel times between major hubs will be reduced to minutes.
The loop is effectively positioned to resemble an underground motorway, with numerous small, dispersed stations, some occupying only two parking spaces. This flexibility allows stations to be embedded in shopping malls, office buildings and even residential areas, allowing for congestion-free access.
This makes the "tunnel" faster, quieter and less crowded than a traditional subway.
The ring system will be jointly built by Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Boring Company. It will be gradually expanded into a city-wide network, connecting core business areas, residential areas and tourist areas. When fully completed, the capacity is expected to exceed 100,000 passengers per hour, significantly shortening the city's commuting time.
The Boring Company emphasizes that safety is its primary concern. Each tunnel is equipped with ventilation systems, emergency exits, fire detection and fire extinguishing systems, and maintains 24-hour communication with the operation control center. The entire system has been audited by the US Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
Since its opening in 2021, the Boring Company’s first operating project, the Las Vegas Loop, has transported more than 3 million passengers. The Las Vegas Loop is currently in the expansion phase and will extend to 110 kilometers with 104 stations connecting Harry Reid International Airport, Allegiant Stadium and downtown Las Vegas.
Based on this successful experience, the Boring Company also announced that it will launch a similar project called the "Music City Loop" in Nashville, Tennessee, with construction scheduled to begin at the end of 2025.
The Dubai Circle is highly consistent with the goals of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai City Master Plan 2040, both of which focus on sustainability and seamlessly connected urban transportation networks.
Dubai has long positioned itself as a pioneer in next-generation transportation technology and is actively involved in cutting-edge areas such as self-driving taxis and air transportation. If the Dubai Circle project is successful, Dubai will become a global benchmark for zero-emission high-speed underground transportation and provide a forward-looking model for the city's future transportation development pattern.
