Getty Images and Perplexity signed a global, multi-year licensing agreement on Friday that will allow the artificial intelligence (AI) startup to showcase the photo distributor's editorial and creative images in its search and discovery tools.

Getty shares soared 60% in pre-market trading following the announcement.
Under the agreement, Perplexity will be able to integrate Getty’s application programming interface (API) technology into the workflow of its AI platform to obtain high-quality visual materials and improve image attribution.
Perplexity will also upgrade its functions and add image copyright information annotations and source links, aiming to educate users on the legal use of authorized content.
The collaboration comes as AI companies are coming under increasing scrutiny over how they use copyrighted content. Getty has previously licensed content to platforms such as iStock and Unsplash, and has also taken legal action against platforms such as Stability AI for unauthorized use of its material.
