According to the China Fire Protection Official Account,Mr. Cao's home in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province was burned to a mess because his son, Xiao Cao, illegally modified an electric bicycle and charged it at home, causing a fire. Fortunately, his family managed to escape.Late at night, Xiao Cao heard a "crack" sound coming from the living room and discovered that the battery was spewing black smoke and catching fire. The fire spread rapidly. The family escaped with the help of neighbors, and all the property in the home was burned.
The fire investigation results showed that the cause of the fire was ruled out as external fire sources and residual fires, and it was not ruled out that it was caused by thermal runaway during the charging process of the electric bicycle battery.

According to Xiao Cao, his electric bicycle was a certain brand of bicycle purchased in a store on July 15.
The core reasons for this accident were three fatal safety hazards:
Use of second-hand batteries that exceed the standard:In order to improve battery life, Xiao Cao spent 2,300 yuan to buy a 72-volt 55-amp second-hand battery from a car repairman, which far exceeded the "battery voltage ≤ 48 volts, maximum output voltage ≤ 60 volts" stipulated in the new national standard for electric bicycles. The battery had no brand, the production information was polished, and the source was unknown.

Using inferior second-hand chargers:I spent 45 yuan to buy a charger on a second-hand platform. Although it was marked "for lithium batteries", it did not have a manufacturer and product number, so it was an unqualified product.

Illegal charging at home:On the night of the incident, the modified electric bicycle battery was charged indoors. The battery thermally lost control and caused a fire. The flames quickly ignited surrounding cabinets and other items.

According to China Fire Protection, there are currently about 380 million electric bicycles in use across the country, and illegal charging and modification can easily lead to safety accidents.
Official emphasis:
Purchase regular products: Purchase electric bicycles and accessories through regular channels, check whether the product logos are complete, and avoid fake and shoddy products.
Illegal parking and charging is strictly prohibited: Do not park or charge indoors or on corridors. Charge in designated areas to avoid blocking escape routes.
Standardize charging behavior: do not use inferior chargers, reasonably control the charging time, do not charge overnight, and replace batteries in time when they age.
Eliminate illegal modifications: Do not modify batteries, circuits, etc. without authorization to avoid overloading of circuits and causing fires.
Flying wire charging is prohibited: to avoid fire or electric shock accidents caused by exposed wires aging.
