Nintendo announced new data on the performance and user conversion of its new generation console Nintendo Switch 2 at its first half of fiscal year 2026 financial report meeting. The company revealed that approximately 84% of Switch 2 users had owned the original Switch, demonstrating an exceptionally smooth user transition between the two generations of consoles. At the same time, Nintendo confirmed a major strategic shift-future development resources will mainly focus on the Switch 2 platform.

The report clearly stated: "In the future, we will shift our main development focus to Switch 2 and expand our business around the new platform." Although game development for the first-generation Switch is still continuing, the focus has already begun to tilt towards Switch 2. The official announcement five months after the release of Switch 2 suggests that Nintendo may be preparing to completely stop developing games for the previous generation console.

This certainly doesn’t mean that Nintendo has stopped developing games for Switch – we’ll have Metroid Prime 4: Beyond in a few weeks, and a number of other titles have been officially announced for release in 2026. But the latest statement means that from now on, Nintendo's first-party games will be developed exclusively for Switch 2, and cross-generation works like "Metroid Prime 4" and "Pokémon Legend: Z-A" will no longer be launched.

It is really surprising to start the generation transition so soon after the launch of Switch 2. But data this week confirmed that Switch 2 sales had exceeded 10 million units by the end of September. These numbers may have prompted Nintendo to decide to focus on Switch 2 game development. As a console that has been with us for 8 years, the first generation has brought us many top-notch game works. We will wait and see whether Switch2 can continue the glory of the first generation in the future.
