According to Bloomberg, the smarter and more powerful version of Siri being developed by Apple will use the Gemini artificial intelligence model developed by Google. Apple will pay Google about $1 billion per year for this large AI model with 1.2 trillion parameters.

The number of parameters is an important indicator of the model's understanding and response capabilities. The more parameters, the more powerful the model is usually, but the training method and architecture also affect the results. It is reported that the number of parameters of the Google Gemini model far exceeds the AI model currently used by Apple.
The current cloud-based version of Apple Intelligence (Apple Intelligence) uses 150 billion parameters, but the specific parameter amounts of Apple’s other AI models have not yet been announced.
Apple plans to use Gemini for multi-step functions such as summary, complex task planning and execution, and some Siri features will still use Apple's own AI model. It is worth noting that Gemini developed by Google for Apple will run on Apple’s dedicated private cloud servers, and Google will not have access to Apple users’ data.
Gemini uses an "expert hybrid architecture". Although the total parameters exceed one trillion, only some parameters are activated for each query. This design allows for both large computing power and low computing cost.
Apple had considered using its own large model, and had also tested solutions from OpenAI and Anthropic, but ultimately chose Google Gemini because Anthropic was too expensive. In fact, Google has a long-term cooperation with Apple in the field of search engines, paying Apple approximately US$20 billion every year to become the default search engine on Apple devices.
Although Apple currently relies on Google AI, it is still committed to independent research and development, and plans to switch to its own solution when its own large model matures. It is reported that Apple is building a cloud model with 1 trillion parameters, which may be put into use as soon as 2026. Apple is unlikely to take the initiative to disclose details of its cooperation with Google during the development process.
It was originally planned that Siri would be updated in iOS 18, but due to architectural issues it was postponed to the iOS 26.4 version in spring 2026. By then, the new version of Siri will be able to handle more complex questions and complete more tedious tasks between applications, with functions close to Claude and ChatGPT. But Apple is not currently planning a separate chatbot application.
