U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday local time to launch the "Genesis Mission," an effort by the federal government to promote artificial intelligence (AI) innovation and the latest step taken by the Trump administration to promote AI technology and its applications.

Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, told reporters before Trump signed the order that the effort was aimed at better coordinating research efforts across government agencies and integrating AI tools more effectively to achieve more scientific breakthroughs.

Kratsios added that the mission will use the computing resources of the Department of Energy's national laboratories to acquire federal data sets and conduct more experiments that leverage AI, and he predicted that this work will help shorten the time to scientific discovery.

A senior administration official, who declined to disclose details of the order, said partnerships with private companies such as Nvidia, Dell, HPE and Advanced Micro Devices will boost the lab's supercomputing resources.

Officials said Monday the move will accelerate scientific discovery in materials engineering, health sciences and energy. They have also sought to portray these innovations as key to helping boost production and lower prices, another priority of this administration in addressing voters' concerns about the cost of living.

“The United States is on the brink of a scientific revolution through the power of AI,” Kratsios said on Monday.
