Roblox, the gaming platform that has long been the subject of complaints and lawsuits over child safety issues, recently launched the use of AI-driven facial age recognition to improve user matching in an effort to respond to society's calls for the protection of underage users. According to a new interview with the New York Times, Roblox CEO David Baszucki responded to the future development of the platform.

The interview focused on the newly launched safety features, especially how these initiatives affect user groups, including minors.

It is worth noting that when a reporter asked whether Roblox would add features such as "micro-transactions, loot boxes, and 'children's gambling'" in the future, Baszuki said frankly: "We have to do this." After the interviewer pressed further, he added that if the simulated gambling mechanism can be implemented in a legal and educational way without involving children's actual financial investment, he thinks it is "a brilliant idea."

Current research suggests that gambling mechanics in video games may be linked to addiction problems in adulthood, especially when the games imitate real-life gambling such as casino sound effects and visual elements. It’s worth pointing out that most current game loot boxes have a money element. In addition to the addiction risks that gambling mechanisms may bring, microtransactions themselves are often accused of being manipulative and even predatory.

This move triggered intense discussion and criticism within the industry and the public. Some comments believe that as a platform mainly for children, Roblox’s senior management’s decision to incorporate a “gambling” mechanism into the game platform, even if it advertises educational significance, is tantamount to promoting a harmful model in disguise. Many commenters expressed concern that this could lead to the platform digging its own grave, while also making it difficult for parents to accept their children being exposed to gambling behavior and AI facial recognition in entertainment.
