Time goes back to the afternoon of November 22, when 39-year-old Chen Wenlin was delivering food at Xincheng Jiayuan Community, Jiusheshu Street, Tongzhou District, when he smelled a pungent smell at the elevator entrance on the 16th floor.

Based on his experience as a construction site safety officer and chef, as well as what he learned from Meituan’s daily fire safety training, he immediately determined that it was a gas leak.

Chen Wenlin did not choose to avoid danger. Instead, he turned back to remind the customers who had just received their meals and asked them to go downstairs and call the police. He then knocked on doors to evacuate residents on the same floor. After confirming that no one was around, he quickly ran to the property security room to explain the situation.
