Instagram on Wednesday launched a generative background editing tool powered by artificial intelligence to U.S. users. Ahmad Al-Dahle, Meta’s head of generative artificial intelligence, posted on Threads that the tool will allow users to change the background of pictures through prompts in Stories.

When users click on the background editor icon on the image, they get prompts such as "On the red carpet," "Chased by dinosaurs," and "Surrounded by puppies." Users can also write their own prompts to change the background.

Once a user posts with the newly generated background, others will see a "Try it" sticker with a prompt so they can also use the image generation tool.

Earlier this week, Snapchat released a new tool for its paid users that lets them create and send AI-generated images. In August, the company launched a new feature called Dreams, which allows users to create fantasy images of themselves in different themes. Earlier this year, the social network rolled out the ability to pop up background prompts for Snapchat+ users.

Earlier this month, Meta made 28 AI-powered characters available to US users across all its apps (WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram), along with support for Bing search and better contextual windows. At the same time, the company also launched a standalone AI image generator called ImaginewithMeta, powered by its own model called Emu.
