It is reported that the iPhone 18 Pro series, planned to be released in 2026, is being regarded by Apple as a "substantially stacked" product update. One of the most watched changes is the possibility of implementing under-screen Face ID on the iPhone for the first time. According to a Chinese tipster, Apple is developing a new "micro-transparent glass" solution to hide Face ID-related components under the screen, thereby reducing the screen opening without sacrificing functionality.

The current news has not clearly stated which specific model will be the first to adopt under-screen Face ID in 2026. However, based on previous rumors, this feature is more likely to be prioritized on high-end models such as iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, because the related optical and engineering difficulties are higher and the cost is higher. Some analysts pointed out that this type of solution is similar to the existing microhole or nano-patterned glass technology in the industry. By enhancing the infrared transmittance in specific areas of the screen, the Face ID component can "work across the screen."

The whistleblower also claimed that Apple has asked the supply chain to speed up the R&D and mass production of related components, which is seen as a signal that Apple is moving towards the actual implementation of under-screen Face ID. However, industry opinions are not entirely consistent as to whether the iPhone 18 Pro must be equipped with under-screen Face ID, and there have been conflicting rumors before.

Earlier reports stated that Apple’s internal plan is to move Face ID to the bottom of the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, while only leaving a small opening in the upper left corner of the screen for the front camera to further reduce the visible area. At the same time, display industry analyst Ross Young has also said that some 2026 iPhone models will use under-screen Face ID, but may still retain a smaller slot or area rather than a completely no-hole design.

On the other hand, sources such as Mark Gurman mentioned that Apple's 2026 iPhone models will use a smaller "Smart Island" area as a whole. This is not logically inconsistent with the advancement of under-screen Face ID, but is instead regarded as part of a progressive transition. If reports that Apple is adjusting the pace of iPhone releases are true, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are still expected to debut as scheduled in September 2026, and may appear on the same stage as Apple's first foldable iPhone, bringing a new round of changes to screen form and front-facing interaction methods.
