On December 12, JD.com announced that it will invest 22 billion yuan in the next five years to build approximately 150,000 new "Brother's Home" housing units to improve the living conditions of front-line logistics and food delivery employees. According to the plan, the additional 150,000 housing units will be provided through rental, self-construction and housing security funds. Prior to this, JD.com had provided 28,000 housing units for front-line employees in 145 cities across the country. The monthly rent of some "Brother's Homes" can be lower than 50% of the surrounding market price.

In addition, JD.com has invested more than 22 billion yuan in improving employee living conditions in the past. For the 10 billion housing security fund it will set up in 2023, front-line employees account for 77% of the applicants.

In terms of welfare protection, JD.com said that it has 100% signed labor contracts and paid five insurances and one fund for front-line employees such as full-time riders. The welfare system also includes employee relief funds, family reunion subsidies and exclusive meal discounts for frontline employees.

In terms of career development, JD.com and Guangdong Province recently jointly established the country’s first “Modern Rider Academy”. The academy plans to cover more than 100,000 riders and front-line employees of JD.com in Guangdong Province in the next three years, providing training including safety regulations, mental health and new job skills.
