Naughty Dog has canceled The Last of Us standalone multiplayer game and will focus on developing single-player games in the future. We have already seen this story this year on Arkane, the developer of Microsoft's "Red Cloud Island". Naughty Dog has announced that it will cease development of The Last of Us Online. The studio says that over the next few years they will need to put all of their resources into post-launch content, an approach that will severely impact their ability to develop future single-player games.

"We realize that many of you have been anticipating news about the project we have been calling The Last of Us Online. We have made the very difficult decision to cease development of the game."

Naughty Dog knows fans of The Last of Us multiplayer community will be unhappy with the news, and wanted to provide some context as to why they've chosen to halt development.

"While we were working on The Last of Us Part II, the multiplayer team had already begun pre-production work on the game - crafting an experience that we believed was unique and had huge potential. During this time, as the multiplayer team tinkered with The Last of Us concept, their vision became clearer, the gameplay became more refined and satisfying, and we're enthusiastic about the direction the game is headed.

Over the course of full production, our ambitions became clear. In order to launch and support The Last of Us Online, we must devote all of our studio resources to supporting post-launch content for years to come, severely impacting future single-player game development. So, there were two paths before us: either become a purely live-service game studio, or continue to focus on the single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog's legacy. "

Naughty Dog later confirmed that they have "more than one" ambitious new single-player game in development. However, the studio has not yet revealed what those games will be.

It was reported that as early as May this year, Naughty Dog had scaled back the development plan of "The Last of Us Online" due to Bungie's internal evaluation. Naughty Dog reportedly suffered a round of layoffs in October and its multiplayer game project was "put on hold."

Now, Naughty Dog has confirmed that it will no longer be developing the game and will continue on the single-player path that has shaped Naughty Dog's strong position among PlayStation's first-party studios.

Naughty Dog's next work is "The Last of Us 2 Remastered", which will be released on January 19, 2024, on PS5.
