Qualcomm announced the acquisition of RISC-V startup Ventana Microsystems. This acquisition means that Qualcomm may launch a dual-architecture parallel strategy. In the future, its chip products are expected to integrate both the self-developed Arm architecture core and the high-performance RISC-V architecture core.
Founded in 2018, Ventana focuses on developing high-performance RISC-V CPU designs for the data center and enterprise markets, and has successfully launched multiple generations of products.
Qualcomm said,After the acquisition is completed, it will continue to promote the research and development of the self-developed Arm architecture Oryon core, and will also continue to iterate Ventana's RISC-V design solution to further improve its processor performance in related fields.
In fact, Qualcomm has already launched its layout in the RISC-V field. As early as the Snapdragon 865 chip launched in 2019, the company has already adopted RISC-V microcontrollers; in 2023, Qualcomm and Google reached a cooperation to jointly develop low-power, high-performance RISC-V chips for wearable devices.
