U.S. President Donald Trump is suing the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for $5 billion over misleading editing in a documentary last year that showed he called for outright violence in a speech before his supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
A defamation lawsuit against the BBC was filed in Miami federal court on Monday.
Trump has threatened to sue before, and BBC chairman Samir Shah admitted last month that clips of Trump's speeches broadcast on the "Panorama" program in 2024 mistakenly gave people "the impression of a direct call for violent action." A few days later, the station issued a second apology, but rejected Trump's request for compensation.
"I'm suing the BBC because they fabricated facts," Trump said at the White House on Monday. "They really made me say things I never said."
The BBC has not yet responded to a request for comment.
