According to Bloomberg, OpenAI has hired former British Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne to lead a new initiative to work with governments to build AI infrastructure. As countries race to deploy the data centers and computing power needed to run advanced AI systems, OpenAI is tapping the well-known political figure to advance its plans.

OpenAI Chief Operating OfficerBrad Lightcap posted on social media on Tuesday that Osborne will serve as the head of the "OpenAI for Countries".Letcap said governments need help understanding how AI can be integrated into their economic development strategies, as well as public services such as health care and education.

Osborne currently serves as co-host of the Political Currency podcast and chairman of the board of trustees of the British Museum. He said he decided to join the program after talking to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, COO Lightcap and other executives. He described the plan as aiming to help society share the dividends of AI development.

Osborne will be based in London and his hiring is part of a plan announced by OpenAI earlier this year to work with governments on localizing AI infrastructure and products.According to a report by Bloomberg in May, the "OpenAI National Cooperation Plan" aims to help governments expand data center capacity and customize AI tools according to local languages and needs. The funds will be shared between OpenAI and participating governments. The initial goal is to launch 10 international cooperation projects.
