Musk said on Tuesday that his artificial intelligence startup xAI has acquired a third building to expand infrastructure, with the goal of increasing model training computing power to nearly 2 billion watts. This latest expansion highlights xAI’s ambitions—the company hopes to compete more effectively with industry leaders (OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude) by training more advanced large models. xAI's supercomputer cluster in Memphis, Tennessee, is called "Colossus" and is hailed as the world's largest supercomputer cluster.
Musk posted on the X platform: "xAI has acquired a third building, named MACROHARDRR." He did not disclose the specific location of the building. The name "MACROHARDRR" seems to be a parody of Microsoft.
It was previously reported that this building will be used to build a third ultra-large data center, located on the outskirts of Memphis.
xAI plans to expand the capacity of its "Colossus" supercomputing cluster, with the goal of enabling it to accommodate at least 1 million graphics processing units (GPUs).
The start-up plans to start the renovation of the newly acquired warehouse in 2026 and upgrade it into a data center; the new data center and the "Colossus 2" supercomputing center are adjacent to the Tennessee Valley Authority power supply network and other energy facilities in the Memphis area.
However, the continued expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure has also triggered criticism from environmentalists - the operation of data centers consumes huge amounts of energy.
