Apple has announced a new "conditional pricing" feature for App Store subscriptions. According to the company, this provides developers with a new way to "attract and retain users" by "enjoying subscription price discounts as long as users actively subscribe to different subscriptions."
In a post on Apple's developer site, Apple explained:
Conditional pricing on the App Store is a new feature that helps you attract and retain subscribers, allowing you to offer customers discounted subscription prices as long as they actively subscribe to different subscriptions.
What’s interesting about this new contingent pricing feature is that it can be used for either one developer’s subscription or to bundle subscriptions from two different developers. For example, Apple explained that if a developer proactively subscribes to another developer's subscription, it can entice new users to join by offering a discounted price.
Conditional pricing is available for subscriptions from one developer or two different developers. For example, you could offer Ocean Magazine premium subscribers the opportunity to subscribe to Mountaineer at a discounted price of $4.99/month instead of the normal $5.99/month. Customers can pay the discounted price as long as they remain a subscriber to Ocean's.
Customers can find these pricing discounts in the app, in non-platform marketing channels, and in planned locations on the App Store. The Apple team will help implement management to provide customers with a seamless redemption and purchase experience based on contingent price propositions provided by developers.
Apple says it's currently piloting the new feature, and developers can sign up to be notified when more details become available in January.
