Apple confirmed it has acquired Q.ai, an Israel-based audio artificial intelligence startup whose technology focuses on helping devices including iPhones more accurately understand human speech in noisy or less-than-ideal environments. The entire Q.ai team will join Apple, including CEO Aviad Maizels; this is the second time Maizels has sold his company to Apple, having already acquired PrimeSense, which he founded, in 2013.

Apple did not disclose the specific amount of the acquisition, nor did it directly state the motivation for the acquisition, but Q.ai's technical capabilities in the fields of machine learning and imaging are considered to be key factors. Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of hardware technologies, said in a statement that Q.ai is a "brilliant company pioneering new and creative ways to apply imaging and machine learning."

According to reports, Q.ai’s core technology is designed to allow devices to better recognize what users say even when the surrounding environment is not ideal. Related solutions can not only improve speech understanding in the presence of loud environmental noise, but can also be used to help voice assistants like Siri parse speech content at extremely low volumes or even whispers.

The acquisition comes amid growing competition in voice interaction and generative AI. At present, companies such as Google and OpenAI have provided voice interaction functions for their respective AI chatbots, while Apple is stepping up its efforts to improve Siri's overall capabilities to cope with pressure from its opponents. Although Siri has been one of the main entrances for iPhone users to talk to their devices for many years, it has long been criticized for its finicky and error-prone performance in noisy environments, blurred pronunciation and other scenarios. Apple obviously hopes to improve these weak links with the help of Q.ai's technology.

Apple is pushing forward with a new round of Siri renovation project, with the goal of making the voice assistant more personal and conversational, and plans to launch a new version in the next few months. Judging from the timing, the acquisition of Q.ai may not have an immediate impact on the upcoming major release of Siri, but the industry generally expects that the company's technology will bring substantial upgrades to Siri in subsequent iterations.
