Google announced the launch of Gemini Assistant’s walking and cycling navigation functions in Google Maps. Previously, this integration was only available for driving navigation scenarios. Officials describe the experience as "like having a friend sitting in the passenger seat." Users can ask questions directly to Gemini while walking or riding, and it will respond with voice based on local map data.

After turning on walking or cycling navigation, users can ask questions such as "Which neighborhood am I in now?" and "What are the highest-rated restaurants nearby?" Gemini will give answers based on map information. This design takes special care of cyclists and provides a more hands-free operating experience through voice interaction, helping users obtain the information they need without frequently checking their phones.
While riding, users can ask Gemini to report an estimated time of arrival, or check when their next meeting will start, without taking their eyes off the road. If you find you are late temporarily, you can also directly say "Send Sarah a message saying I will be 10 minutes late", and Gemini will send a text message on your behalf in the background, allowing the user to focus on the road ahead.
Gemini navigation is now rolling out globally to iOS and Android devices. This update is the latest step for Google to deeply integrate Gemini into its own product ecosystem, reflecting its overall strategy of opening up multiple services around a unified AI assistant.
In addition to maps, Gemini has recently received important upgrades in other products. The latest version of Google Chrome has made Gemini more deeply embedded in the browser, allowing users to interact with web content in a fixed side panel or generate images using features such as Nano Bana Pro without the need to frequently switch tabs.
Earlier this month, Google also launched the "Personal Intelligence" function for Gemini, connecting it with Google Drive, Google Photos and Gmail, allowing the assistant to give more targeted responses based on personal data. Users can even use Gemini to find the best meeting time for all attendees in Google Meet, allowing for a higher degree of automated scheduling collaboration.
Overall, Google is unifying its various service forms through Gemini and guiding users to provide more context and data to this AI assistant in exchange for a more intelligent and personalized experience. It is foreseeable that more Google products will receive so-called "Gemini blessing" in the future, providing comprehensive AI assistance in different usage scenarios.
