The next-generation iPad Pro version slated for launch in 2024 may support MagSafe charging. The news comes from a source familiar with the company that makes magnets for Apple products. Although it has not been confirmed at this time, there have been rumors in the past that Apple is making design changes for the iPad to support wireless charging.
As early as 2021, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said that Apple was considering equipping the 2022 iPad Pro with a glass back panel to enable wireless charging. Gurman specifically said that Apple is testing the "MagSafe" system for the "iPad Pro". The 2022 iPad Pro models don't have wireless charging, glass backs, or obvious design changes, but it's possible Apple will put the feature in a future release.
New 11.1-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models with OLED displays are scheduled to launch in 2024, and the devices are expected to receive design updates along the way. Apple has not updated the appearance of the iPad Pro in several years, and a complete overhaul should be carried out next year.
Apple may plan to launch a glass-backed iPad Pro in 2024 as part of the OLED update, but this news has not been confirmed. Similar to the iPhone, a glass back would make the iPad Pro more susceptible to damage if dropped, but it would also allow for the use of new wireless accessories and a universal "MagSafe" charger for both iPhone and iPad. The iPad may also work with 15W magnetic Qi2 chargers being developed by third-party manufacturers.
The 15W MagSafe charging speed will be slower than USB-C wired charging, and the same is true for the iPhone, but it will provide more charging options for Apple device users in some scenarios where there is no charging cable.
It's also possible that the "MagSafe" we're hearing about charging the "iPad" refers to a Mac-like snap-on wired charger, rather than an iPhone-style wireless magnetic charger. Apple is developing a more Mac-like aluminum Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro launched in 2024. The new iPad will also use the same M3 chip as the MacBook Pro.
