Software giant Adobe recently announced that it will gradually stop supporting and selling its 2D animation software Adobe Animate. This decision is in sharp contrast to its continued increase in the field of AI.On February 2, local time, Adobe issued a notice to users, announcing that Animate would cease sales on March 1, 2026. Enterprise customers can continue to use the application, download resources and obtain technical support until March 1, 2029, while technical support for ordinary users will only last until March 2026.
Public information shows that Adobe Animate was formerly known as Flash Professional.It is a 2D animation and interactive content creation software with more than 25 years of history. It is widely used in web animation, game materials and interactive media production, and has long been regarded as an important tool for creators in related fields.
Regarding the reason for discontinuing support, Adobe explained: "As technology advances, new platforms and models can better meet user needs."
But what is intriguing is that Adobe does not provide an alternative product with completely equivalent functions. It only recommends that Creative Cloud Pro users use After Effects to process keyframe animations, or add animation effects to photos and videos through Adobe Express, which has been described by the outside world as "replacing cars with bicycles and skateboards."
In fact, this decision was not without warning. Animate has previously been absent from Adobe’s annual Max conference, and its 2025 version has not yet been released.
In contrast, Adobe is vigorously promoting the AI-based product line, including launching Firefly AI subscription services, customizing generative models for enterprises, and deeply integrating AI into core software such as Photoshop.
However, ending support for mature products in the absence of suitable alternatives has caused widespread concern among users. Many users pointed out thatAnimate is even the main reason why they subscribe to Adobe services. Even if they can find alternative tools, the experience and project assets accumulated over the years will be invalidated.
