Recently, due to a mistake made by HP and Microsoft, Windows 10/11 users were automatically installed HP printer supporting software HPSmart. The root cause of this problem was that HP submitted incorrect printer metadata to Microsoft, causing Microsoft to mistakenly identify all printers as HPLaserJetM101~M106, and then push and install the HPSmart application to all devices connected to the printer.

The good news is that this error does not affect the normal use of other non-HP printers. Except for the installation of HPSmart and the printer icon being changed to HP, the normal functions of the printer are not affected.

Today Microsoft released an independent fix for this problem. The fix will automatically detect the problem after startup. If a misidentification problem is detected, it will clear metadata, clean HP icons, automatically delete HPSmart applications, etc.

This tool can be used by individual users or can be deployed in batches by enterprise IT administrators. It is also recommended for individual users. After all, uninstalling HPSmart directly cannot solve the metadata problem. You still need to rely on this repair program to solve the metadata problem.

Repair program download address:

Please download the fix program corresponding to your system architecture, then place it in a specific path such as the root directory of the C drive, then open the command prompt in administrator mode and execute the following command.

The following takes the x64 system and the root directory of the C drive as an example:

cd /d C:PrintMetadataTroubleshooterX64.exe

If you are an affected user, the program will automatically handle it, including clearing metadata, cleaning HP icons, and deleting HPSmart. If you are not affected, it will prompt: Troubleshooternotapplicablesincemetadatapackagenotfound (because the metadata package is not found, the troubleshooter is not applicable)
