Microsoft is planning to introduce image support to Notepad in Windows 11, which means that Notepad is gradually bidding farewell to its positioning as a simple text editor and evolving into a productivity tool with richer functions.Windows Latest learned from internal sources at Microsoft that the picture function is an extension of Notepad’s existing Markdown support, and users can turn it off at any time in the settings.
This feature is currently showing toolbar buttons in the new feature introduction pop-up window of the Windows Insider testing channel. Although it has not been enabled yet, it is confirmed that it is being tested in internal versions and is expected to be fully rolled out within a few months.

Since WordPad was removed, Microsoft has continued to add features to Notepad to fill the void. Markdown format support has been added one after another, enabling text bolding, italics and hyperlink insertion.
The addition of the picture function makes Notepad closer to the simplified version of Word in function, while maintaining its lightweight characteristics.

In response to users' concerns about software bloat and performance degradation, Microsoft sources said that after internal testing, image support has minimal impact on the startup and running performance of Notepad.
At the same time, Microsoft retains the option of one-click shutdown in the settings. Users can disable image display and Markdown formatting functions at any time.
