Mozilla today pushed the Firefox 148.0 update to official version users, bringing previously promised AI control features to the browser, as well as a series of backup, accessibility and drag-and-drop related fixes. This update is especially aimed at users who do not want to see any AI-related experiences in the browser, providing options for centralized management and one-click shutdown.

In the new version, a dedicated "AI Control" area has been added to the Firefox settings interface, where users can manage various AI enhancements in a unified manner. They can either completely turn off the related experience or perform personalized configurations as needed. Mozilla has previously announced this "AI kill switch" in the beta version, and now it has finally been implemented in the official version.

Firefox 148.0 also adds enhancements to PDF accessibility support, now with better compatibility for screen readers when reading mathematical equations embedded in PDF documents, helping users who rely on assistive technology to more smoothly navigate such content. At the same time, Mozilla decouples the "remote improvement" function from the telemetry data reporting requirements. Even if users choose not to share telemetry or participate in experimental projects, they can individually choose whether to receive remote browser changes and optimizations from Mozilla.

In terms of backup capabilities, Firefox Backup is now available on Windows 10 for users who have enabled the "Clear history when closing Firefox" option. When backing up, the system will automatically exclude all data that is set to be cleared when exiting the browser, thus taking into account privacy requirements and configuration preservation needs.

The translation function has also been expanded. Firefox 148.0 has added bi-directional translation support for Traditional Chinese and added a translation function for Vietnamese, further expanding the language range of built-in translation. In addition, the new tab background wallpaper can now also be displayed when creating a new tab in a "container tab", not just the default tab, bringing a more consistent visual experience to users who use multiple containers to separate work and personal environments.

This update also fixes several issues that affected the experience. These include: After a major version update, a situation where language packs may be incorrectly disabled, causing Firefox to display the interface in the wrong language, has been fixed. On Windows, dragging a downloaded image into Adobe Illustrator incorrectly inserted the image link address instead of the image itself. This behavior has also been fixed.

Currently, Firefox 148.0 is available for download on Mozilla's FTP server. Users can obtain the installation package through the corresponding directory, or they can wait a few hours for the upgrade to be completed through the browser's built-in update mechanism. The official detailed version update instructions will be online on the corresponding page of the Firefox official website. Users who are still waiting can also download the browser with the latest improvements through the Firefox official website or the Microsoft App Store (for Windows 10 and 11).

In addition to the mainline version, Mozilla simultaneously released Firefox 115.33, which is the last security update for Firefox 115 and is currently the only mainstream browser branch that still supports Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Firefox running on these older Windows systems will no longer receive any updates after February 2026, marking the official end of Mozilla’s support for pre-Windows 10 platforms.
