Anthropic wants to ensure that its models cannot be used for autonomous weapons or to monitor U.S. citizens. The Department of Defense has made it clear that it hopes to use the Anthropic model for "all lawful scenarios" without restrictions.

As of February, Anthropic was the only AI company deploying models on classified Department of Defense networks and providing customized models to national security customers. The company was awarded a $200 million Department of Defense contract last year.

The disagreement is the latest hurdle in Anthropic's increasingly tense relationship with the Trump administration, which has publicly criticized the company in recent months. The meeting between Amodei and Hegseth is expected to help both parties reach a solution and determine the next path.

“Anthropic is committed to leveraging cutting-edge AI to support U.S. national security,” an Anthropic spokesperson said on Monday. The company added that it was in “productive and honest dialogue” with the Department of Defense to properly address these complex issues.

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI researchers and is best known for developing the Claude family of AI models. The company completed a $30 billion financing round earlier this month, raising its valuation to $380 billion.
