As the "9·11" incident approaches 25 years ago, the reconstruction project of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, New York, is entering its final stages. Construction of a new 2 World Trade Center skyscraper is about to begin and will be positioned as the new global headquarters of American Express.

This building was designed by Foster + Partners, a well-known British architectural firm, and the project plan has undergone repeated adjustments over the years. Initially, Foster's team was responsible for the design. Later, the developer instead invited BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) to propose a radical stepped tower plan, but in the end the plan was shelved, and Foster's team returned and came up with the current version. The latest design renderings show that the new Building 2 will have a thick rectangular volume with a full-body glass curtain wall on the exterior. Three large terraces and six corner sky gardens with greenery will break up the sense of volume and emphasize a green and open office environment.

According to the plan, the height of the new World Trade Center 2 will reach 1,226 feet (approximately 373.7 meters), reaching the "supertall" level, and is expected to become the 11th tallest skyscraper in the United States. The adjacent One World Trade Center is currently the tallest building in the United States, with a height of 1,776 feet (approximately 541 meters). The total internal construction area of the new Building 2 is close to 2 million square feet (approximately 186,000 square meters), with a total of 55 floors, most of which are office spaces. The entire building can accommodate up to about 10,000 office workers.

As the future headquarters building, American Express stated that the project will introduce smart building technology and high-efficiency energy-saving systems, and will strive to pass the LEED green building certification standard to create a landmark office building that combines sustainability and high-end office experience. Kevin O'Toole, Chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, pointed out that promoting the construction of the last commercial office building in the World Trade Center Park is an important node for the park and the entire region. This building will further consolidate this area as an important commercial and transportation hub in the United States. It also reflects the continued attention and long-term investment required to promote such large-scale projects.

According to the timetable, the new World Trade Center 2 is scheduled to officially start construction in the spring of 2026 and is expected to be completed and delivered in 2031. It will be developed by Silverstein Properties, which has long been responsible for the reconstruction of the World Trade Center. By then, the core area of New York's World Trade Center, which has been rebuilt for many years, will basically complete its overall update after the completion of this new super high-rise office tower.
