Anthropic is in a stalemate with the U.S. War Department over the military’s request for unrestricted use of the artificial intelligence company’s technology.As the compliance deadline set by the Pentagon for Anthropic on Friday afternoon approaches, more than 300 Google employees and more than 60 OpenAI employees have signed an open letter urging the leadership of their respective companies to support Anthropic and reject this unilateral use request.
Specifically, Anthropic opposes the use of artificial intelligence for domestic mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. The signatories of the open letter hope to encourage their respective employers to "put aside differences and unite as one" and stick to the bottom line drawn by Anthropic.
"They are trying to divide each company using the fear that the other will compromise," the letter reads. "This tactic only works if we don't understand each other's positions."
The letter specifically calls on executives at Google and OpenAI to stick to Anthropic’s red lines against mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. “We hope that leadership will put aside their differences, unite, and continue to reject the current demands of the War Department.”
Executives from both companies have yet to formally respond to the letter.
